Technically Operation Aurora occurred in 2009, but the public did not learn about it until Google posted a message about the security breach in January 2010. Oft quoted marketing wisdom states that your blog has an average of seven seconds – if you’re lucky – to capture a user’s attention before that user moves on. There are lots of answers to that question but here’s one that might help: guest blogging. Guest blogging allows you (with the permission of a fellow blogger) to spread the word about your mutant monkeys … I mean, your business to a different segment of the population with only the time and effort it takes to produce an extra post or three. So it’s cost effective and provides some free publicity. One of the hardest things in the world to market is a theatrical production. Theater is a niche market and a rare indulgence for many. The other advertising is through Facebook. What’s nice about Facebook is that it lets companies get very specific in the people and places that they want to advertise to. For instance, they won’t just advertise for people looking for apartments, but rather people looking for apartments for rent in Seattle. This makes it much easier not to waste money on out of state advertising.

The other ways to advertise is through grass roots campaigns on Craigslist. This is free, but would take a lot of time and energy since those ads tend to be buried rather quickly. Advertising online will make getting an audience to your show easier.

Blogging for Business
So blogs became as commonplace for businesses as company websites, business cards and plastic containers with fuzzy leftovers. It seemed like everyone from General Motors (which produces a blog called FastLane) to Bikes Not Bombs Retail Bike Shop (bnbbikeshop.blogspot.com) ran a regularly updated blog – or in some cases two or even three blogs. But traditional blogs are not as common as they used to be. The targeted social connectivity options delivered by venues like Facebook and Twitter took what some call a Godzilla-sized bite out of activity that had belonged to the blogosphere. Others, like Technorati’s “State of the Blogosphere” report, characterize that shift as a leap in the blogosphere’s virtual evolution.

Social media sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Myspace and Facebook provide interaction almost completely dictated by a linked group of users. The time and effort required by page administrators is minimal compared to what the lengthier blog or even some of the micro-blog formats might require. But maybe rather than tossing around terms like ‘death’ or ‘evolutionary leap,’ we could say instead that the blogosphere has simply diversified.

Embracing Diversity
Bloggers who pursue topical writing can continue to do so with greatly reduced competition because those more interested in posting personal thoughts find a more compatible outlet, (plus friends and ‘like’ buttons aplenty) on social media sites. In the end, everyone – from bloggers to users – finds what they’re looking for more easily. We come, we post, we leave happy.

You might wonder how I know all of this?  Well, one of my friends was recently going through a tough time in a marriage and was considering filing for divorce.  But before she made that final decision she wanted to learn more about divorce in our state of Mississippi.  We did some research and found a wealth of information online.  In fact we also found a website where she could start filing her divorce online.  She would be able to go through an online question and answer session and then be able to work with one of the Mississippi divorce lawyers in their directory to finalize the divorce.

We also discovered other things like the various legal grounds for divorce in Mississippi while we were researching online.  She found out that there is no legal separation in the state.  She also discovered that there is such a thing as no-fault divorce where both parties can claim irreconcilable differences.  We went on to read more about property division, child custody and other legal requirements for divorce in our state.  In the end, it was eye-opening and educational.  I am not sure what will happen with my friend and if she will stay married or not.  But at least now she understands her options.

As a community-college math tutor, I see it all the time: students who psych themselves into believing that they just can’t do it. This applies not just to math, but to college in general. The Downfall of iWeb and SEO

Search engine optimization is the best way to leverage online marketing. If you are just starting out building a website, now is the time to incorporate SEO strategies that will give you the most bang for your buck. That being said, if you already have a website, is it worth redoing it strictly to achieve better rankings with search engines? That depends on your marketing objectives and how serious you are about your business.

Say, for instance, that your website was built using Apple’s iWeb application, which is an extremely easy way to create a website (and one that comes free with a Mac). Even beginners can easily put together a site using this incredibly user-friendly software. The problem with iWeb is that it lacks meta tags and unique meta descriptions and meta keyword tags for each page. As well, much of the text within the pages of your site will not be indexable by search engines because they are thought to be graphics rather than content (and as we know, content is king when it comes to search engine optimization strategies). There are other issues with iWeb – it gets pretty technical. Not that your site cannot become popular on its own – and that will make it well ranked (the reverse of SEO). If you have an outstanding website with a nice look and feel that is full of helpful, interesting content, it could take off without the use of search engine rankings.

Sufficed to say that iWeb isn’t the best choice for businesses that are serious about online marketing. On the other hand, it is perfect for beginners who want to easily create a website but who are not trying to market themselves online. You can hand out business card with your site’s URL, and visitors will see a nice site (one that hopefully contains plenty of valuable, well written content), and that is enough. Objective met.

So again, it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. To be sure, iWeb has its place – it’s just not right for everyone.

SEM- Search Engine Marketing. SEM walks hand in hand with SEO. Both refer to the process of increasing the visibility of a particular website in search results but many experts describe SEM as much more general (all online free or paid advertising) with SEO as just one type of search marketing.

SEO- Search Engine Optimization. Whole blogs, websites, books and other materials have been dedicated to explaining the best methods for practicing search engine optimization. The goal of SEO is to choose keywords that web crawlers will latch onto most often and use those words to maximum effect to promote a site. The better the keywords you use, the more frequently and the more prominently your website will appear in a list of search results. More people are more likely to visit your site translating directly to more sales.

The better the optimization, the better your ranking. What are the best ways to optimize your website so that search engines give it a higher visibility ranking?

First, some background. The four primary search engines are Yahoo, Google, Bing, and Ask. Unfortunately, no one is able to guarantee a top spot on these search engines. Both components are equally important when it comes to increasing your site’s visibility on the web.

Most of us will also be called upon at some point to teach a technological something – whether it’s conducting an internet search, sending an email or creating a PowerPoint presentation to someone who confesses – perhaps with a hiss — a strong dislike of ‘techie stuff’. Maybe that someone you teach the something to will be your co-worker, your grandmother or a stranger.

It’s scary to learn something new for most people. But there are ways to smooth the technological tutoring path for both intrepid teacher and fear-defying student.

1. Pat on the Back. Everyone needs encouragement. Let the person know you are confident that with time and practice he’ll be showing others how it’s done.

2. Benefit Build-Up. Remind him of the benefits of the skill he’s about to learn if it looks like he’s getting discouraged (saving time perhaps, or maybe a new skill to add to the resume).

3. Stick to the Basics. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when learning a new skill. Answer questions as clearly as you can without going into rare exceptions.

4. Check in. Next time you talk to the person ask how they’re doing with the skill you taught them (unless it’s the stranger we’re talking about as stalking is generally discouraged).

5. Don’t Misrepresent. If you do not know, say so. You don’t want to misrepresent yourself and confuse someone who is already uncomfortable with technology. Just direct them to help if you know where they might find it (a how-to website, a more informed co-worker).
