Internet Addiction – Make Sure You Are Not A Victim Of Virtual Addiction

Are you addicted to the internet? There are many persons who are of the opinion that this is not a bad thing even if it were to be true. Well, addiction to internet can have many harmful consequences.

The simplest way to find out whether you are addicted to the internet or not is to shut down your computer and disable it for a day. When you discover that you are constantly fidgeting and are not comfortable without access to the internet, you will realize that the internet has dominated your daily schedule without you even realizing it.

People take a day off from their work to enjoy life with their family. People do not spend their entire day with their family in a week. Yet, there is absolutely no sense of regulation as far as the internet is concerned.

People access the web without any sort of discipline. This is not to say that you should access the internet only during office hours or during relaxation hours. However, it is important to lead a life beyond the internet. Things have come to such a pass that people log on to the internet the first thing in the morning and stay online till they go to sleep.

Of course, they don’t do a lot of things online all the time. More often than not, the web becomes an excuse to waste time that otherwise could be used productively elsewhere. In such a scenario, it is very important to check whether you are guilty of addiction to the internet or not.

It may be something as inane as checking your e-mails frequently without any excuse. Or, it can cause you to ignore your family members because you are very keen on winning a multiplayer role playing online game. You may not need psychiatric help immediately but there is no doubt that uncontrolled internet connection is going to lead to mental health problems.

Can you really be addicted to the Internet? It is such a great tool, is being addicted even a bad thing?

Some experts are saying that addiction to the Internet is a growing phenomena because of the ease and privacy of use. Studies estimate that up to 10 percent of users are addicted, with most of these being males who are educated and introverted.

Some signs of the disorder are being online for hours when you thought you were just going to check your emails or surf for a bit.

Believing the Internet is the only way to feel good, and when not on the Internet a feeling of depression sets in, or a bad mood. The real world, as opposed to the virtual, holds no interest anymore.

Thinking about the Internet 23 hours a day, seven days a week, is a sure sign that your Internet use is beyond the pale, and you need to curtail its use.

Hiding the amount of time you are on the Internet from your family and friends.

Virtual relationships are more important to you than your relationships with your friends at work or school, or your family. Chatting with someone you have never met through the Web takes precedence over real world interaction.

Using the Internet for other addictive behaviors, such as gambling or hacking or viewing pornography.

If you or a family member or friend exhibits any of these signs, then it may be time to cut back on the time spent on the Internet. The Internet is most often used for positive reasons and if used responsibly is of great benefit to society and individuals.

Educating people of what is too much use and what types of sites should be avoided can help ensure that the Internet continues to be a useful source of education and social interaction for all.
